Monday Morning Musings - RIP Ray K. Metzker

Modernist photographer and Philadelphia resident Ray Metzker died last week.  He was 83 years old. Metzker was well known for his high contrast black and white images rich with light and pattern.  He created dizzying and sometimes elusive photographs both in-camera and using multiple negatives in the darkroom.  The New York Times has a complete biography and obituary here.   A few images to enjoy below. . . 

Cindy Sherman Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art

A Cindy Sherman retrospective has opened at the Museum of Modern Art just in time for the Department of the Arts trip to NYC! Since the 1970s Sherman has photographed herself in a range of guises - from clowns to damsels in distress. A link to the New York Times review of the exhibition is here. One of her early "Film Stills" images is above along with a photo of the entrance to the exhibition. Not to be missed!!!

Wedding Photographers Beware

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. Thanks to Chad for passing on this gem from the NY Times. A wedding photographer is being sued for missing some key shots in a wedding which occurred in 2003. From the times:

"But what is striking, said the studio that took the pictures, is that Mr. Remis’s wedding took place in 2003 and he waited six years to sue. And not only has Mr. Remis demanded to be repaid the $4,100 cost of the photography, he also wants $48,000 to recreate the entire wedding and fly the principals to New York so the celebration can be re-shot by another photographer.

Re-enacting the wedding may pose a particular challenge, the studio pointed out, because the couple divorced and the bride is believed to have moved back to her native Latvia."
